How the Game Differs
Indoor field hockey differs from outdoor field hockey in several ways:
-
The playing area is smaller than the outdoor turf.
-
Side-boards mark the sidelines helping to keep the ball in play.
-
The goals are smaller than in outdoor field hockey.
-
A team consists of 5 field players and 1 goalkeeper on the court, with a maximum of 10-12 players on a team.
-
The players may not hit the ball, but only push it or deflect it, and may not raise the ball except in the shooting circle, with the purpose of scoring a goal.
-
Players typically play with a lighter, quicker stick specially made for indoor use.
-
Players aren't able to push the ball directly into an opponent (this is dangerous and referred to as 'drilling'.
-
Players aren't allowed to have four points touching the ground; for example, two feet and a hand on the stick is okay, but, two feet a stick and a knee is not allowed.
Equipment
Indoor hockey can be played with outdoor sticks, there is no requirement for new sticks to be purchased, however, both specialist hockey stores in NZ carry limited indoor brands that you can try.
The main difference with an indoor hockey stick is weight, as you aren't able to hit the ball in indoor, so the sticks are thinner much lighter.
An indoor hockey ball is also a little lighter than outdoor, and has no dimples.
Many players choose to wear a protective glove on their left hand, as the game is often played with the stick low and parallel to the ground.
