Competition Overview

Wellington Hockey provides a diverse array of hockey competitions catering to various age groups and skill levels throughout the winter season. With a commitment to inclusivity, Wellington Hockey ensures that players, regardless of their skill ability, can find a suitable grade to participate in. Beyond the winter season, we offer Fast, Fun & Family Fives and Local Masters Hockey competitions during the summer seasons, providing year-round opportunities for players to engage in the sport.

Local Hockey Competition

Providing a competition that is inclusive for all with a range of different grades to suit all skill level abilities. Find out more about Adult Open Grade, Intercity, Secondary School and Junior competitions.

Winter Hockey Season
  • The Open Grade Competition is the foremost premier hockey competition of the Wellington region. The competition offers grades for individuals of all abilities.

    The mid-season Intercity Hockey Competition features clubs from neighbouring areas like Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and Manawatu, amplifying the passion and skill on display.

  • Showcasing talent and sportsmanship with development pathways ensuring that every player receives the support they need to reach their full potential on and off the field.

    Our newly created Year 9&10 secondary school competition grade provides those new to the sport opportunities to grow and develop in a positive and encouraging environment as a transition from 7-a-side hockey to 11-a-side hockey.

  • Introducing a focus on finding a goal to score in that is not being defended (change of attack), scoring goals, passing and the concept of teamwork.

    The focus of the competition will see an introduction to playing positions and positional concepts with 6-a-side, third-field format structure.

    7-a-side, half-field games for children with a primary focus on developing transferable skills and conceptual understanding of hockey positioning and tactics.

Summer Hockey Season
  • WHA's new summer competition offers fun and flexible hockey options for everyone, including Family Fives for families with young kids, Fast Fives for competitive players, and Fun Fives for social teams or beginners.

  • A local Master's Hockey competition tailored for adults aged 33 and above in an 11 a-side format.
