Officiating is a vital part of our sport. Wellington Hockey is constantly looking to grow its officials panel at all levels. We appreciate and value our umpires and officials with what they give to our sport. Whether you’re an experienced umpire, new to the area or keen to start, we can help you get into the game. Wellington Hockey provides support and guidance for umpires officiating at all levels of local hockey through our development programmes and courses. Many of our umpires hold Hockey New Zealand Umpiring and Officiating qualifications, and are regular attendees at National Tournaments with many achieving to a high level.
Ultimately, without umpires and officials, competitive hockey simply wouldn’t work. Umpires are crucial figures on the hockey turf and each year they officiate hundreds of games at all levels of the sport throughout the Wellington Region.

Max Wallace Named Finalist for Official of the Year at Wellington Regional Sports Awards
Congratulations to Max Wallace, who has been named a finalist for Official of the Year at the 2026 Wellington Regional Sports Awards. This well-deserved recognition celebrates Max's outstanding contribution to officiating and his ongoing commitment to developing and supporting officials across the Wellington hockey community.
Four Wellington Officials Selected for National Under-18 Tournaments
Four Wellington Hockey officials have earned appointments to the 2026 National Under-18 Tournaments, with Josh McDougall, Max Wallace and Jack Campbell heading to Tauranga and Ashley Hanaray selected for Palmerston North. Max and Jack will make their National U18 debuts.
Wellington Officials Set for World Masters Hockey World Cup in Europe
Wellington Hockey officials Viv and Steven Dyhrberg, alongside Technical Official Nylan Profitt, are heading to Europe later this year for the World Masters Hockey World Cup tournaments in Rotterdam and Brasschaat. The trio continue to build their international officiating experience following their involvement at the 2024 World Masters Hockey tournaments in Auckland.
