Officiating is a vital part of our sport. Wellington Hockey is constantly looking to grow its officials panel at all levels. We appreciate and value our umpires and officials with what they give to our sport. Whether you’re an experienced umpire, new to the area or keen to start, we can help you get into the game. Wellington Hockey provides support and guidance for umpires officiating at all levels of local hockey through our development programmes and courses. Many of our umpires hold Hockey New Zealand Umpiring and Officiating qualifications, and are regular attendees at National Tournaments with many achieving to a high level.
Ultimately, without umpires and officials, competitive hockey simply wouldn’t work. Umpires are crucial figures on the hockey turf and each year they officiate hundreds of games at all levels of the sport throughout the Wellington Region.

Steven Dyhrberg Appointed to World Masters Hockey Officiating Committee
Local WHA umpire Steven Dyhrberg has been appointed to the World Masters Hockey Officiating Committee for a two-year term from January 2026, alongside a role on the WMH World Cup Organising Committee for Belgium and the Netherlands 2026.
Six Wellington Officials Appointed to National Hockey Championship
Wellington Hockey is proud to announce the appointment of six Wellington officials to the 2025 National Hockey Championship in Christchurch. Their selection reflects the strength of our umpiring and officiating community, and we wish them every success at the tournament.
