The next generation of Wellington Hockey talent was on full display last week as our U15 Boys and Girls teams took part in the annual Lower North Island Tournaments. Over four days of hockey, both groups showed impressive skill, teamwork, and pride wearing the black and yellow Wellington playing shirt.
U15 Boys Tournament in Wellington
This year’s U15 Boys Tournament was hosted right here at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington. The event brought together some of the best young players from across the Lower North Island, creating a busy and exciting atmosphere around the venue all week.
Wellington entered four teams in the tournament – the Thunder, Storm, Lightning, and Cyclones – and each team showed tremendous growth throughout the competition. From strong defensive efforts to creative attacking play, the boys demonstrated the depth of young talent coming through Wellington’s development pathway.
A highlight of the week was the camaraderie shown between players from different associations. We were especially pleased to have six players from Poverty Bay join the Cyclone team. They fitted in seamlessly and made valuable contributions on and off the field.
For many players, this was their first experience playing in a regional tournament, and the lessons they learned about teamwork, resilience, and composure will be valuable as they continue to grow as athletes. The week also offered a great opportunity for young umpires and officials to gain more experience, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make the tournament run smoothly.
U15 Girls Tournament in Wairarapa
At the same time, our U15 Girls teams were competing over the hill in Wairarapa. The Panthers, Falcons, and Wildcats took on strong opposition from around the region and represented Wellington with pride and energy across the four days of play.
The players handled everything the tournament threw at them, from close matches to challenging conditions, and did it all with a positive attitude. Coaches and managers spoke highly of how much the teams developed through the week, both in their technical skills and in their understanding of the game.
Wairarapa Hockey did a wonderful job hosting and creating a welcoming environment for players, coaches, and supporters. Their efforts ensured that the girls had a memorable and enjoyable tournament experience.
A Team Effort On and Off the Field
These tournaments do not happen without the help of a huge number of people. We would like to thank all the coaches, team managers, umpires, and volunteers who gave their time to support our players. Their effort behind the scenes made sure that each player could focus on enjoying their hockey and representing Wellington to the best of their ability.
Parents also deserve recognition for the many hours spent driving, cheering, and supporting their children through the season. Their encouragement plays a big part in creating a positive and supportive environment for young players to thrive in sport.
As the tournaments wrapped up, it was clear that the experience had been about more than just results. For our U15 players, it was about learning, growing, and enjoying the chance to play hockey at a high level alongside teammates and friends. The future of Wellington Hockey looks bright, and we are proud of the way these young athletes carried themselves throughout the week.
