Wellington Hockey is excited to announce the launch of the Hockey Nines Tournament, a brand-new pre-season competition designed to give P1 and P2 teams the perfect hit-out ahead of winter.
Set for 7–8 March 2026, this fast-paced nine-a-side tournament will take over the National Hockey Stadium, offering clubs an opportunity to test combinations, sharpen skills, and enjoy two full days of competitive, high-tempo hockey before the season gets underway.
The event has been shaped in response to strong club interest for more pre-season opportunities and will provide players with meaningful minutes on the turf, high engagement for squads, and a competitive but enjoyable environment to reconnect after the summer break.
A Fast, Fun Pre-Season Hit-Out
Hockey Nines brings a new flavour to Wellington’s pre-season calendar. With more open field, more touches, and more opportunities to play aggressively, the format is designed to create quick transitions, high work-rate, and plenty of attacking moments. It’s an ideal chance for coaches to assess depth, trial structures, and prepare teams for the demands of Premier hockey.
Start Pulling Your Team Together
Players are encouraged to reach out to their club and team mates now to get their team sorted with their club administrator to enter into the competition. With limited places available across both men’s and women’s divisions, the tournament is expected to fill quickly.
More information, including match structure, scheduling details and team entry instructions will be provided to clubs early in the new year.
