Wellington Hockey was excited to be involved in the 2025 Students Officials Day events, held at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua on 14 May and the Walter Nash Centre in Lower Hutt on 22 May. Organised by College Sport Wellington and Nuku Ora, the days brought together students from across the region to explore the world of officiating.
Each session began with interactive theory workshops, where students asked thoughtful questions, shared ideas, and discussed the challenges and responsibilities of being an umpire. From understanding the role of an official to learning how to stay confident under pressure, the sessions were packed with great conversations and curiosity.
After the classroom sessions, students headed out onto the turf to put their learning into action. They got the chance to blow the whistle, practise key umpiring signals, and try umpiring small mini games. For many, it was their first time umpiring, and they jumped in with enthusiasm. Others, already with some experience, helped lead by example and build confidence among their peers.
Wellington Hockey would like to thank College Sport Wellington, Nuku Ora, and all the students who participated. It's exciting to see so many young people stepping up and giving umpiring a go.
