20 student umpires complete development programme, ready for 11-aside hockey with skills in positioning, communication and game management.

Over the past four weeks, around 20 student umpires have taken part in our Student Umpire Development Programme, finishing the course ready to step into 11-aside hockey.

Delivered with the support of umpires from across the Wellington Hockey community and the newly formed Officials Working Group, the programme combined rule knowledge and theory with practical on field learning. Participants were able to build their confidence through interactive activities and real game scenarios, helping bring their learning to life.

Throughout the programme, student umpires developed key skills in positioning, signalling, and managing game situations. There was also a strong focus on communication and how to handle moments of conflict in a constructive way. These are all essential tools for stepping into competitive hockey environments.

With the secondary school season kicking off at the start of May, these umpires are now well prepared to take on roles across our secondary grades.

A big congratulations to all those who took part. It has been great to see the growth across the group over the past few weeks, and we look forward to seeing them continue to develop throughout the season.
