Little Sticks, Big Fun

Funsticks focuses on developing individual foundational movement and motor skills, helping to build a young person’s physical literacy and preparing them for a lifelong involvement in sport. The programme is based on the Hockey NZ module, with adjustments made to place a stronger emphasis on individual development.

This programme is designed for children aged 5–6 years (Years 1 & 2) who are new, or relatively new, to the game of hockey. As the name suggests, the key objectives are to provide participants with:

  • An introduction to hockey with an emphasis on fun

  • Opportunities to develop fundamental skills such as running, dodging, and striking

  • Opportunities for players to learn through exploration and play

  • A positive, supportive, and quality coaching environment

  • Full involvement for all participants

  • Regular changes of activities to maintain enthusiasm and engagement

  • A safe environment for all activities

  • Equipment provided (sticks, balls, cones, bibs, and goals) to help minimise costs for caregivers
