WHA Community News: Edition 3

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

Hello Community!

We have been sending out community updates to your clubs and following on some feedback, we are working out the best way to share this with you all! For now, we are looking at the website and social channels - but we are all ears!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NHC Tier 2 Coach:

We are exploring the option of entering a Wellington Men’s team into the Tier 2 competition of the National Hockey Championship (NHC) this year. In recent history, we have only entered a Tier 1 team in both genders, however, based on player feedback we see an opportunity to build on this and expose more players/coaches to the National tournament. We have completed a player EOI and have significant interest from P1 men’s players. Unfortunately, we had very little interest from the women and do not see that as a viable option for this year (we will revisit this in 2024).

We are now taking expressions of interest from coaches. Please circulate the opportunity to any relevant coaches within your club and ask that they complete the online form:

We view the NHC Tier 2 competition as suitable for P1 club players that want to compete nationally and a good stepping stone for those with aspirations and the potential to play for the Wellington A team in the future. In alignment with that, we are seeking coaches who coach/have coached at the P1 club or representative level, or have the potential to do so in the future.

InterCity Finals:

Please be aware that the draw for the InterCity semi-finals and finals will not be going live on PlayHQ. The semi-finals have been drawn across the regions on the 17th June with all the finals (and 3 other games) due to be played in Wellington on the 24th June. The draw for InterCity semi-finals is as follows:

The decision was made earlier this month that all the finals and trophy presentations will be hosted in Wellington. Therefore, following the semi-finals on the 17th, we have been working on allocating turf space as soon as possible to allow us to confirm other draws. Thank you to all the community for your patience and understanding. If you are involved in the InterCity competition, you can work out your potential draw for your final below:

The full InterCity draw has also been shared with the clubs involved and it will be live on social media very shortly.
