WELLINGTON HOCKEY

Wellington Hockey offers a wide range of opportunities for juniors to start playing hockey. We have programmes for beginners who have never picked up a stick, all they way through to players further through their development. Click the windows below to find out some more about the structures and formats we have on offer in our Junior Competitions.

  • The Junior competitions (Year 3-8) will run on Saturday mornings from the May to September. 

     

    Fun Sticks (Year 1&2) is a 8-week programme that will run during term two.

    After School Hockey Club (ASHC) is a 6-week programme for Years 1-8 that will run during term one and four (term two and three to be confirmed in 2024 based on interest).

    No games will be held during school holidays or Kings Birthday weekend. (Kings Birthday 3rd June, Term 2 holidays Saturdays 13 & 20 July 2024).

  • After School Hockey Club (Years 1-6)

    New for 2024 Term 1

    Wellington Hockey Association is introducing a new Year 1-6 programme for all genders called After School Hockey Club (ASHC). The programme will be split into two age groups: Years 1-3 and Years 4-6. This programme is ideal for finding a fun and active session for your children straight after school, suitable for both new and developing players. This is a great chance to play some hockey, learn something new and make some friends all before going home for dinner. 

    The programme will be offered across three HUBs in the wellington region in term 1 and 4. Depending on interest this may expand to terms 2 and 3. Click on the relevant location below for more information about each HUB.

    Led by WHA coaches, the after school hockey club will provide:

    • Six 45-minute Sessions of active sport

    • Sessions designed to develop entry level/basic skills

    • Opportunity to make new friends

    • Starts at 3:30pm for Years 1-3 and 4:15pm for Years 4-6

    • On Mondays (NHS only) and Thursdays (3 HUBS)

    • Hockey sticks and balls provided

    • HAVE FUN

    Venues and details below:

    • National Hockey Stadium, Wellington (Mondays & Thursdays)

    • Elsdon Park, Porirua (Thursdays)

    • Fraser Park, Lower Hutt (Thursdays)

    Key Information:​

    • Years 1-3 sessions held 3:30pm-4:15pm on both Mondays and Thursdays

    • Years 4-6 sessions held 4:15pm-5:00pm on both Mondays and Thursdays

    • Thursdays at NHS, Elsdon Park and Fraser Park, starts: 8th Feb, 15th Feb, 22nd Feb, 7th Mar, 14th Mar & 21st Mar (No session on 29th February due to Masters Tournament)

    • Mondays at NHS only, starts: 12th Feb, 19th Feb, 4th Mar, 11th Mar, 18th Mar & 25th Mar (No session on 26th February due to Masters Tournament)

    • $60 per child for six 45-minute sessions

    • Please bring: water bottle, weather and turf appropriate clothing/footwear (no studs) and a mouth guard

  • Fun Sticks

     

    Our Fun Sticks programme offers our youngest players a fun and encouraging environment to learn and play the game. The HUB based programme will be lead by Wellington Hockey and offer players fun games and exercises followed by free form games and good, meaningful competition for our participants.

    The programme will be offered across four HUBs in the wellington region in term 2 and 3. Depending on location the sessions will be on Saturday morning or mid-week. Click on the relevant location below for more information about each HUB.

  • Years 3 & 4

     

    The Years 3 & 4 competition will start on 11th May 2024 until 14th September 2024 , on Saturday mornings between 9:00am-12:30pm.

    We will be hosting a HUB Based 3-a-side format at Wellington's National Hockey Stadium, Porirua's Elsdon Park and Lower Hutt's Fraser Park. More detail on the format and structure of the competition is available in the How to Hockey Handbook.

  • Years 5 & 6

     

    The Years 5 & 6 competition will start on 11th May 2024 until 14th September 2024 , on Saturday mornings between 9:00am-12:30pm.

    The competition will host a 6-a-side, half-field format with 20 minute halves. The focus of the competition will  see an introduction to playing positions for and positional concepts. We will encourage the  rotation of playing positions and the development of transferable skills and conceptual understanding. The HUB based competitions will take place at Wellington's National Hockey Stadium, Lower Hutt's Fraser Park, Upper Hutt's Maidstone Park, Porirua's Elsdon Park and the Kapiti Sports Turf in Paraparaumu.

  • Years 7 & 8

     

    The Years 7 & 8 competition will start on 11th May 2024 until 14th September 2024 , on Saturday mornings between 9:00am-12:30pm.

    Our year 7 & 8 competition hosts 7-a-side games for children with a primary focus on developing transferable skills and conceptual understanding of hockey positioning and tactics. More information on playing structure and competition formats available via the How to Hockey Handbook.

    Games will be played at Wellington (National Hockey Stadium), Lower Hutt (Fraser Park), Upper Hutt (Maidstone Park), Kapiti (Kapiti Sports Turf) and Porirua (Elsdon Park)
