James Birkefeld

Performance & Pathways Manager

James comes from the Mid North Coast of New South Wales and brings with him 25 years of working in hockey, including Performance and Pathways experience from both Australia and the UK. He has a wealth of experience that he is ready to share with the Wellington Hockey community once he completes his relocation from Sydney in the next few weeks.

James is excited to get to work with our U18s, U20s and NHC teams whilst supporting U16 individual athlete development and overseeing Jack and Kieran in all their programme delivery. If you or your dependent(s) are involved in any of these spaces, you can reach James by email.

Kieran Wells

Community Hockey Officer

Kieran brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in umpiring and officiating, having been appointed to numerous National Hockey Tournaments across NZ in recent years. His dedication to the Wellington Hockey Community has been valuable, umpiring regularly in Wellington over the last 6 years.

Kieran is excited to grow, support and develop officials through creating development pathways for our WHA officials, alongside celebrating their commitments and achievements.

Kieran will also be supporting youth player development by leading the U11 boys and girls, U15 boys and girls, U16 girls and U18 boys programmes. If you or your dependent(s) are involved in any of these spaces, you can reach Kieran by email.

Jack Paton

Community Hockey Officer

Jack originally hails from Northland and he has spent the last three years studying at Waikato University. Through these experiences, Jack comes with a wealth of varied playing, coaching and development experience in both Hockey, Cricket and other sports.

After working with Waikato Hockey during his time at university, Jack is thrilled to be moving to Wellington to take his next steps in community sport and he will be a resourceful addition to the WHA team due to his dedication to both athlete and coaching development.

Jack will lead on the WHA coaching pathway whilst also leading the U11 boys and girls, the U13 boys and girls, the U16 boys and U18 girls. If you or your dependent(s) are involved in any of these spaces, you can reach Jack by email.
