Primary Competition
Our Focus
Our focus is on development and encouraging a lifelong love of sport, our competition formats should encourage this. There are no grades to enter teams into with only one competition. Teams face different opposition each week, we are mindful that we want good, meaningful competition for our participants.
Playing Format
Year 1 /2’s – Player’s will participate in fun sticks program, which will be followed by ad hoc games at each venue.

Year 3 / 4’s - We are excited to announce the year 3 /4 ’s at the NHS hub we are taking up a 4 vs 4 format. We would like to roll this out in all hubs but want to get feedback on this before rolling it out. If you are based in the other hubs outside of NHS please let us know your preferred option. More details on the structure of the competition can be found in the how to hockey guide attached below.
Year 5 / 6’s – Will participate in a 6-a-side competition.

Competition Purpose
To have an aligned competition focused on the holistic development of our players, coaches and umpires in line with the WHA Talent Framework. It must also encourage new to sport athletes and provide opportunity to all. To achieve this, we need meaningful grades where people can participate and develop at stages and levels appropriate to them.
Playing Days for 2021
Premier 1 & Premier 2 - Friday nights
Premier 3 - Thursday nights
Seven a side - Wednesday nights
Reserve 1 & 2 - Tuesday nights
In 2021 we have also introduced a 7 a side grade that will run all season. This grade is designed for the social or new to sport players. The 7 a side format will allow for more touches on the ball and greater involvement of all participants. This grade is played on Wednesday nights.
Competition Dates
Premier 1/2 - 14th May to 24th September
Reserve 1/2 - 17th May to 21st September
7 a side - 19th of May to 22nd September
Premier 3 - 20th of May to 23rd September
Please note that week 9 (5th July), P1 games are played on Monday night. This means there is no training that night. This is due to the U18 tournaments happening the first week of the term two holidays.

2021 Open Grade Players transfer
Another Google form has been created to facilitate clubs or associations to transfer players. Please follow the link for 2021 Open Grade Players transfer – https://forms.gle/3MPiEAzJmjwg4Mud6
Competition officers’ team would be collaborating with HNZ to approve the transfer requests. If the transfer is just within the Wellington Association, then Club can fill in the form and send it WHA for approval.
For inter-Association transfers it is up to the Club requesting transfer to manage the process and ensure all party approval before the player concerned can take part in the Open Grade WHA competition.
Note that we will not approve transfers for players that are not “financial’ unless there is some form of representation from the player on how any unfinancial status is to be rectified.
2021 Players re-grading
For players re-grading, clubs can send an email to WHA at info@wellingtonhockey.org.nz mentioning the reason of re-grading.
