SHANE MCLEOD LEADS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT IN WELLINGTON TOUR

Updated: Jul 26, 2022

Last week with the help of the Coach for Life Foundation, Wellington Hockey was lucky enough to host Belgium Red Lions and Olympic Gold Medal winning coach Shane McLeod in a series of workshops for the players and coaches of our community.

Shane led two workshops in the Secondary, Open Grade and representative spaces in which he shared his knowledge and insights on how to create a coaching environment that enables players to develop in a holistic manner, in line with Sport NZ’s Balance is Better approach. Shane shared with those in attendance his coaching philosophy, one that prioritizes the personal development, wellbeing, and enjoyment of his athletes and teams.

Shane also met with representatives of College Sport Wellington in a multi-sport session to share his story and key learning as head coach of the Red Lions. The session was attended by multiple high school sports administrators, coaches and representatives and included lessons on coaching for character and a Q&A session.

On the evening of Thursday the 24th of February Shane joined staff and members of the Wellington Hockey community for an evening fundraising for youth development opportunities and programmes. The dinner saw over 50 individuals in attendance at Petone Rugby Football Club for a chance to learn from Shane as he shared his story, coaching philosophy, and learnings from his time as the leader of the Belgium Red Lions.

For the duration of the trip, Shane was joined by Andrew Gaze, CEO of the Coach for Life Foundation. Founded by John and Sue Tanner, the foundation holds the key objective of growing the quality of youth sport coaches in New Zealand. Shane’s tour will continue as he visits eleven more associations across New Zealand over the next 5 weeks to share his insights, story and experiences with New Zealand hockey communities.

Thank you to Shane, Andrew Gaze and the Coach for Life Foundation making the trip down to Wellington to share their expertise with the Wellington Hockey community.
