NHL Coaching Appointment:

The Wellington Hockey Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Manoj Daji as NHL Mens coach for 2008.

Manoj is a former Auckland, Wellington, NZ Indians and North Harbour Hockey representative player between 1985 and 1996. Since 2002 he has been involved in High Performance hockey coaching having coached Auckland and North Harbour in the NHL along with being the Assistant Coach for the NZ Senior Mens Academy and Junior Blacksticks.

The 2007-8 NZ Indians Coach has twice been awarded a PRIME MINISTERS HIGH PERFORMANCE COACH SCHOLARSHIP, the most recent involving a stint as the Assistant coach for the Spanish Mens Hockey team at the recent Champions Trophy in Kuala Lumpur. In May he travels to Ipoh in Malaysia as an Assistant Coach with the Blacksticks Mens team at the Sultan AZLAN SHAH tournament.

Manoj is married to Wellingtonian, Asmita, and has two young boys, Kaylin and Nikeel. In his working life he is the CEO of ASB College Sport in Auckland. Manoj is excited about the prospect of coaching a young Wellington team with exciting talent in this years new tournament format but realises he has big shoes to fill in taking over from Peter Miskimmin who was his Wellington Captain in 1991. “I have fond memories of being in a talented team who lost on strokes in the Challenge Shield Final led by Peter, Laurie Gallen and Coach David Reynolds. Clearly Peter was a fantastic leader and the best I played Rep hockey under. I feel comfortable coaching Wellington having played for them and spent a year living here while at teachers college along with having coached Kyle, Scott, Grant, Tim and Daniel recently in national trial teams.”

Manoj hopes to continue the traditions started by Peter in the last six years and hopefully add to these with a former Players Breakfast planned for later in the year.

Congratulations and Best of luck in 2008.

Message to the Prospective Players

2008 is an exciting time in NZ Hockey and Wellington Hockey with the upcoming Olympics. Post Olympics opportunities will emerge in the national team with planned retirements therefore good team results at the National tournament in September are paramount for future selection.

With the assistance of Wellington Hockey I am in the process of finalising my management team who will also double as the selection panel for this years team. Consistent performers in premier club hockey will be rewarded with selection in a 22 man training squad to be named in the second week of July to begin training with me once per week from the week of 21 July.

The squad will be fitness tested at the first squad training and placed on a programme aimed at having players peak by the last weekend of the NHLtournament.

After the Premier Club Finals weekend the squad will be trimmed to 18 players who will train fortnightly over the weeks leading to the tournament and play training camp games over 2 weekends in Wellingtonand Taupo.

In the next month each Premier Club coach will receive a pack detailing positional requirements and other characteristics required for selection. Please ask to see these if you are a prospective Rep player wanting to play for Wellingtonin 2008. Good luck for the season ahead.

Manoj Daji
