Wellington Mini Hockey Competitions
Wellington Hockey offer a range of Mini hockey competitions as follows:
4-Aside
Children play in mixed teams - Junior 4-aside is Year 1-2 and Senior 4-aside is Year 3-4
Rules focus on playing safe and fair with the emphasis on learning and practicing hockey skills. There is no record of game results kept. Each game is two 10 minutes halves against other clubs or schools in Wellington.
Playing Venue: All games are usually played on Saturday mornings between 8:00am and 11:30am at the Wellington Indoor Sports Centre, Hall St, Newtown.
5-Aside
Children play in mixed teams - Junior 5-aside is Y`ear 4-5 and Senior 5-aside is Year 5-6
The rules are as for 4 aside but more emphasis is placed on skills. Each team plays one 25-minute game.
Playing Venue: Usually played on a Saturday morning between 8:30am and11:30am, at the Indian Recreation Centre Gymnasium, Kemp Street, Kilbirnie or the Northern United Hockey Club ground, Blackrock Rd, Newlands (Paparangi Tennis Club)
6-aside
Children play in mixed teams. This is for children between 9 and 11 years old (Year 5-6) who have not played hockey before or children that have played 5-aside but are not ready for the 8 or 11-aside competition.
Playing Venue: Played on Saturday mornings at Wellington College Turf, Dufferin St (near the Mt Vic Tunnel)
8-aside
Newly introduced in 2008, this is a development primary grade and is designed for players who are not quite ready for 11-aside (or where a club can’t field enough players for an 11-aside team). For players between 10 and 13 (Year 6-8) and in 2008 the teams were single gender. The focus is on getting players skill levels up and to give them experience of close play.
Playing Venue: Games are played between 7.30 and 8.30 on Saturday morning at the National Hockey Stadium, Mt Albert Rd. Games are played across the main pitch.
11-aside
This is for players aged 10 -13 (Year 6–8) who have played hockey before and is concentrating on building competent hockey players. The competition structure is graded with teams playing against teams of a similar ability in the following grades P1, P2, P3 and P4. All teams are single gender.
Playing Venue: Games are played on Saturday morning from 7.30 – 1pm at either:
National Hockey Stadium, Mt Albert Rd, Newtown
Elsdon Hockey Turf, Porirua
Kapiti, Mazengarb Road, Paraparaumu
Lower Hutt Mini-hockey

Team registrations for all competitions are now closed for 2009.
